Most flat batteries don't come completely out of nowhere — there are usually small warning signs in the days or weeks before. Catching them early means a planned replacement instead of an unplanned callout.

1. Slow or hesitant engine crank

If the engine takes a moment longer to turn over than usual, or sounds slightly sluggish before it catches, that's often one of the earliest signs — the battery is still holding enough charge to start the car, but noticeably less than it used to.

2. Dashboard battery warning light

Most cars have a dedicated battery warning light that can indicate either the battery itself or the charging system (alternator) isn't working properly. It's worth getting this checked rather than ignoring it — by the time it comes on, something has already changed.

3. Dimming headlights or electrics

Headlights that seem dimmer than usual, especially at idle, or interior electrics (radio, dashboard lights) flickering or resetting, can point to a battery struggling to keep up with the car's electrical demand.

4. The battery is 4–5 years old or older

Most car batteries have a realistic working life of around 4 to 5 years, depending on usage and climate. If you don't know how old yours is, it's often printed on a sticker on the battery itself — worth checking even if nothing seems wrong yet.

5. A swollen case or corrosion on the terminals

A battery case that looks swollen or misshapen, or white/greenish corrosion built up around the terminals, are physical signs of a battery nearing the end of its life — these are worth acting on even without any of the symptoms above.

Our approach: if you're not sure whether it's the battery or something else, we check rather than assume — and we'll tell you honestly if a jump start is all you need right now, even if the battery is close to needing a replacement soon.

Noticing any of these signs, or already stuck?

The bottom line

A slow crank, a warning light, dimming electrics, an older battery, or visible damage are all worth acting on before they turn into a full breakdown. If in doubt, getting it checked costs far less time than being stranded.
