Motorhomes and caravans both fall under "big and awkward to recover," but they're actually two different problems. A motorhome is a self-contained vehicle with its own engine that breaks down like any other vehicle, just a larger one. A caravan has no engine of its own — it's being towed, so "breaking down" usually means a problem with the tow setup, a tyre, or the caravan itself while it's still attached to the car.
If your motorhome breaks down
- Get it off the live carriageway if you safely can, same as any vehicle breakdown — hazard lights on, and out of the vehicle if you're on a motorway hard shoulder.
- Weight and size matter for recovery. Larger motorhomes need a vehicle and equipment rated for the job — mention the approximate length and weight when you call so the right recovery vehicle is sent.
- Think about what's inside. Gas, water systems, and any valuables may need considering depending on how long the vehicle will be off the road before recovery, especially overnight.
If your caravan has a problem while being towed
- A tyre blowout on the caravan is one of the more common issues — if it happens, slow down gradually without braking hard, and pull over somewhere flat and visible as soon as it's safe.
- If the caravan has become unstable (snaking), easing off the accelerator rather than braking is the standard advice — braking hard can make snaking worse.
- If the tow car itself breaks down while still hitched, both vehicles typically need recovering together, which is a different job to recovering a car on its own — let us know it's a towing setup when you call.
Our approach: tell us whether it's a motorhome under its own power or a caravan on tow, plus the approximate size — it's the difference between sending the right vehicle first time and a wasted trip.
Motorhome or caravan stuck right now?
The bottom line
Motorhomes and caravans both need recovery equipment sized for the job, but for different reasons — one's a large vehicle in its own right, the other is a towed load that's come loose from its usual setup. Either way, telling us exactly what's happened when you call is what gets the right help moving toward you.
